Open LMS has merged its higher education and corporate learning platforms into a single system, releasing version 5.1 as a direct challenge to proprietary learning management systems.
One platform, two markets
The update consolidates what were previously separate codebases for academic and workplace learning. Version 5.1 launched July 1 with the tagline “Learning That Adapts to You.” It combines open-source flexibility with enterprise-level security and support, a combination they call unique in the LMS market.
David Ells, former managing director at Open LMS, said the change is about more than technology. By unifying their platform, they are delivering a solution that is modern, intelligent, and learner-focused, he said. They promise lower costs and faster innovation for their global client base.
AI and automation at the core
The new platform includes several key upgrades. AI tools now assist with course design and content generation, though institutions retain control over their data. An updated plugin called Conduit automates multi-tenancy management, programs, and certifications.
Reporting has also been overhauled. The next-generation Open Reports Engine provides unified data visibility and AI-powered actionable insights.

Laura Martin, senior director of product management, said the merger of codebases creates a “single, scalable ecosystem” that brings advanced features to every client. They are fulfilling their core promise: delivering a flexible, intelligent environment that truly adapts to clients, no matter their institutional goals, she said.
Open LMS positions itself as a strategic alternative to proprietary LMS providers, offering open-source benefits without sacrificing enterprise reliability. The unified platform is designed to break out of the “walled garden” that dominates the LMS setting.
Global reach and immediate availability
The update is available to all existing and new clients as of July 1. A detailed course covering version 5.1 is available through the Open LMS Academy.
They operate on AWS infrastructure, supporting more than 10 million learners across 120 countries. They remain the world’s largest commercial provider of Moodle hosting and support services.
