
Paul Banksley envisions an education system that operates at 30 times the speed of conventional classrooms.
During a discussion on artificial intelligence in learning, Banksley stated that students could soon finish a full high school curriculum by the end of second grade. The approach focuses on eliminating obstacles that slow progress rather than simply accelerating instruction.
The 30x learning promise
“You’ve seen Young Sheldon, about the child prodigy who reached 9th grade at age nine?” Banksley said. “That won’t compare to what’s coming. With 30x learning, students will complete high school coursework before third grade begins.”
He rejected the idea of a 31x version. “31x learning? Nobody’s coming up with 31x learning. Who learns 31 times faster? You don’t have time to absorb the material! That’s crazy.”

The core of this acceleration relies on a direct student-screen connection. No instructors or classmates—just AI systems that compress six weeks of lessons into a single day. The aim extends beyond speed, reshaping what students can accomplish by adulthood. “That’ll give students time to become neuroscientists, jazz musicians, cybercurrency entrepreneurs, Olympic athletes, and tech moguls,” he said.
Motivation as the driving force
Banksley admitted that AI alone wouldn’t create this shift. A big part of the approach, he explained, is motivation—an element educators have long understood but struggled to implement. “People are trapped in this purist notion that kids should be self-motivated. But most aren’t. We’ll figure out what motivates each kid and use it to get them to put in the work.”
AI now makes this possible through gamification. Students earn XP, maintain streaks, and level up, with the risk of losing points serving as a strong motivator. “These kinds of incentives just weren’t possible before the advent of AI,” he said.
A platform he mentioned, teachtales.com, generates personalized stories tailored to each child’s reading level. “It’s an AI-powered story-building platform that turns every child into the author of their own Lexile-appropriate custom adventures. It cultivates a love of reading and gives every student a shot at becoming a best-selling author.”
Asked whether young learners should depend on AI for writing, Banksley responded firmly. “Are you really asking me this? Of course young learners should use AI to write! Paper is a then thing. Devices are a now thing. And AI is a future thing. Being future-forward means adopting the future.”

He described AI as a tool that removes barriers in writing. “Writing used to be elitist. Only the privileged could learn to write well. That’s changed in the blink of an eye. AI lets everyone write well.”
Human skills in an AI world
With AI managing learning mechanics, Banksley outlined which human skills remain essential. His list included communication, collaboration, engagement, understanding, and leadership, along with newer abilities. “And how to shop with AI. And vibe coding. And crafting a good prompt,” he said.
When questioned whether these skills truly set humans apart—since animals also communicate and cooperate—he responded, “I’ve seen cats and dogs communicate and ants collaborate. But I’ve never seen an animal learn the periodic table, do algebra, or read a novel. How come those things don’t rate as distinctly human?”
For Banksley, the debate isn’t whether AI will transform education but how soon schools will adopt it. The technology exists, he argued. The next step is bold implementation.
